Consulting

Hands-on coaching and consulting for doctors and teams ready to grow.

Coaching and consulting

Some doctors need a thinking partner. Others need direct answers. Most need both at different moments, and I balance the two on purpose. As your coach, I am your collaborative thinking partner who works alongside you over the long term. I ask questions and hold you accountable to the goals you set. Coaching is built on the belief that growth requires participation, so the answers are drawn out of you and your team rather than handed down. This is the sustainable deeper work that changes how a practice thinks. As your consultant, I give you more direct advice. I diagnose what I see, share what opportunities are available to you, and help you decide quickly. When you want an experienced outside perspective and a clear recommendation, this is the faster lane.

The right mix depends on the doctor, the moment, and the problem in front of us. We figure that out together.

Let’s build a path tailored to your practice

Good change can be simple, even when it is not easy. Here is my vibe:

Diagnose. We start by getting clear on your goals and the real opportunities in front of you. I spend time inside your practice, from the reception area to the treatment rooms, so we are defining those goals alongside how care is actually delivered, not against how an org chart imagines it.

Align. We bring the team into it. Everyone needs to understand where the practice is headed and why, because the team is also in the trenches every day. If it is not written and shared, it does not really exist yet.

Implement. We put the systems in place, built around the realities of your practice, your patients, and your market.

Refine. We review what is working, tweak what is not, and keep tightening. Consistency, repeated over time, is what compounds into growth.

From Crown Margins to Profit Margins, I got you.

Three areas of practice success are deeply connected. We cannot improve in a silo by fixing only one of them.

Culture. Strong practices are built on strong teams, clear leadership, and genuine hospitality. I draw heavily from studying the Ritz-Carlton service culture, where caring for your people and delivering a warm welcome are treated as skills, not personality traits. When the team feels led and trusted, patients feel it too.

Capital. Profitability is what lets you keep practicing the way you want to, so we treat it as part of good dentistry rather than some four-letter word. We look at systems, standardization, and scheduling that drive the numbers with a focus on what makes the dollars rather than only the dollars themselves. Streamlining materials, templating the schedule, and tightening operations remove the chaos that quietly costs you money.

Clinical. Competence drives confidence which drives growth. We work on diagnosis, comprehensive treatment planning, and the courage to have conversations supporting these plans. Patients move forward with treatment when it aligns with what matters to them, so communication and clinical skill are built together rather than separately.

What makes our relationship different? I will scrub in with you

I am not an armchair quarterback. I work inside your practice. I sit in on patient interactions and coach you and your team in real time. When it is helpful, I will be chairside with you for the procedure (patients love this). If we are working on your crown prep or composites, or your smile design workflow, we can do it together on real patients, in your space with your materials and your team watching and learning. Implementation is where practices begin to transform.

This works when you choose it and want it

I do my best work with growth-minded general dentists who want to improve clinically, lead better, build something intentional, and who are open to honest feedback. The hands-on coaching and consulting described here is built for private practices. For emerging group practices, my focus is education, which means building and teaching programs that develop your doctors and teams rather than consulting on your operations. If you are looking for scripts to memorize without understanding them, or a quick production bump with no interest in your team, we are probably not the right fit. If you are ready to do the real work and want a partner who has done it too, we will get along well.

“I hired Jen as my consultant in 6 months’ time despite taking more time off from the office I have increased my collections, case acceptance and profits while decreasing my overhead. … Dr. Derse is the most practical, down to earth and approachable dental coach I have worked with.”
